"I just need a basic website."

"Basic website" is an open-ended term.  My definition of basic could be different than yours.  And both may be correct.  To help the web designer understand what you mean, make some goals that you would like your website to accomplish.

Example:

I need my website to:

  • Describe my business and the services provided.
  • Allow visitors to send an email.
  • Display important contact information.
  • Collect emails for future marketing campaigns.
  • Be mobile-friendly

The basics formula for almost any site...  who is being represented, what service or product is being represented and how to get in touch.  A basic visitor will want to know who you are, what you do and how to reach you.

You can always get more complicated, but this should help you explain what you are looking for in a much easier language.
